CONNECTING

Every so often we here at The Hub sit down and make some plans for the next few issues . What do we want in terms of editorial ? Is it time to introduce a new column ? Are there voices and ideas we ’ re missing out on ? We lay out a framework , list some things we want to accomplish , and voila - the next few months are simply a matter or connecting the dots and filling in the blanks . Theoretically .
Forward planning is a good way to run a business , but there ’ s something to be said for last minute inspirations and decisions , too . This issue of The Hub is a good example . Literally none of this month ’ s stories were on our radar when we last sat down to brainstorm . Sometimes , it ’ s better to put our plans on the shelf and go with some other ideas . Luckily , we ’ re an open and flexible team , and can appreciate the value of the idea that appears out of nowhere .
Likewise , The Hub ’ s new podcast , The Hubbub , which made its debut in January . It evolved , quickly , out of a “ why don ’ t we …” conversation , and turned into something concrete , which we hope to offer you every month between issues of the magazine . Our first episode was low-key , but watch us on social media for news of the next one , expected just a couple of weeks from now . It ’ s all part of our big-picture goal to bring you , our reader ( or listener ) together with the ideas and inspirations that make our community amazing .
Plans are good - as long as you also plan to be flexible and inspired . We ’ ll see you next month !

It seems like yesterday we were in the midst of pre-Christmas frenzy but here we are today looking back at that hectic period with relief and post-craziness malaise . Some may be thinking of heading down south , some planning to hibernate but the large majority will either do their best to enjoy our winter wonderland or trudge through it the best they can . What is it about mid-winter that has us so despondent ? My guess is that , as lucky we are in Windsor-Essex to live in the banana belt of the great white north , we have to pay the price by having to put up with lukewarm winters . Throw in climate change of course , and the whole experience adds up to several months of premature April Fools .
To make this dark , wet and cold season ( can you tell I love winter ?) a bit more palatable , we bring you a story of warmth and positivity . The Women ' s March on Washington attracted more than a million women from around the globe to stand up for what are inherently human rights . A busload from Windsor-Essex represented the region in the US capitol and one of them shared her story with us . Check it out on page 14 . If you ' ve ever wondered what it takes to make it as a police dog or their handler , our interview with the Windsor Police Canine Unit will bring you up to speed . We also have a look at the local resurgence of pop-up shops and why they ' re proving to be so popular .
Of course , it wouldn ' t be a new issue of The Hub without our calendar of events , a brand new Shop Hop and our regular columns you ' ve grown to enjoy . Sit back , grab a warm blanket and a hot cup of coffee and see what your community ' s been up to since the last issue . Enjoy !.
