Detroit: from frontier fort to motor city, its history with Windsor-Essex
goes back two hundred years. That relationship has always been back and
forth; what started as a strategic defense point during the War of 1812
eventually evolved into a two-way cross-border conduit for contraband
-whether it was people (escaped slaves in the 19th century, illegal
immigrants in the 20th) or goods (liquor during Prohibition, cheap
cigarettes and groceries today) ā culture and ideas. We share a river,
relationships and a determination to deal with whatever comes our way.
