LOCAVORE: The term “locavore” was coined in 2005 and was
the New Oxford American Dictionary's word
of the year in 2007.
It’s still possible to eat locally during the winter, although
it takes a little extra thought and planning. All over Canada,
there are Community Supported Agriculture shares which
allow city dwellers access to food from surrounding fields all
year around. Shares per month cost around $110 to $180.
Individual farms sell shares of their produce and the goods
are delivered to a predetermined location each week.
Participants simply have to pick up their box.
The locavore mentality isn't just about eating locally, but
thinking locally. People want to be involved in every aspect of
their food. They want to know how the animals are raised, if
they use pesticides on their produce and how much carbon
dioxide is seeping from the trucks who deliver it. The Windsor
movement started around the year 2000 and began to grow in
2005.
Steve Green entered the early years of this movement with
full force. He came up with ideas for Windsor to be fed with
local food. Green realized farmers had no problem producing
plentiful bounties of produce, but never had the time to
market their products. Green now manages the downtown
farmers market and also coordinates the community garden.
Green said the people in Windsor-Essex are particularly
concerned with who the farmer is and how much are they
