CONNECTING
So far it’s been a summer of ‘just right.’ Not too hot, not too
cold, not too rainy or too dry. There’s been a perfect mix of
celebrations and activities - some focused on Canada150, others the
traditional Windsor-Essex favourites and some new ventures
added. And, as always in our area, an ideal blend of ideas that have
stood the test of time and new experiments that address the
changing needs and interests of our community.
And so it should be. Windsor-Essex has always been a
well-blended combination of old and new, then and now, past,
present and future. Longterm projects and short-term ventures
co-exist, mostly peacefully, as voices and efforts from all
perspectives contribute to the strength and growth of our
community. It’s all about balance -to paraphrase Pope John XXIII,
what unites us is much more than what divides us.
In this issue of The Hub, we’ve given you that same perfect
blend. For many of us, fishing along our region’s waterways is a
recreational mainstay. For others, organizations like DWCC have
launched programs like Sport 4 All to help neighbourhoods connect
and stay healthy. Activities like disc golf offer a novel way to get
active; in the local arts scene, sculptors like Donna Mayne
memorialize our history. And you’ll find our August calendar
reflects that balance as well - all four pages of it! As Goldilocks
would say: it’s just right.
Shelley
It’s hard to remember that August isn’t the end of summer. Too
often we get caught up in what happens next, especially as
September brings families back to school and the changing of the
seasons. I read once that August is the Sunday of summer - so make
it last.
After a three year hiatus I’m headed back to school this fall -
the love of learning never ends in our family. That means I’m even
more likely to get swept up in the excitement that is getting ready
for September. I’m constantly reminding myself to stop and enjoy
the summer sunshine. Luckily, we have a great calendar stuffed with
events, a packed Hubbub of local news and some exciting features
that renew our commitment to explore and connect Windsor-Essex.
I was recently invited to join a discussion group focusing on
downtown revival, and I can’t wait to get into the swing of things. If
you’re interested in the downtown core, don’t miss our feature on
the Downtown Windsor Community Collaborative’s Sport4All
program.
Shelley and I are still getting used to Eva’s absence. Whenever
anyone leaves a team there are so many little things you forget that
they were great at doing. We’re working hard to create our own
rhythm and bring new ideas to this local resource.
We’d like to thank you all so much for your continued support,
your birthday wishes (we’re four!) and your regular readership and
participation on our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram posts.
Without you, our passion to bring unique content to Windsor-Essex
would go nowhere. Enjoy this issue of The Hub!
