What Matters To You
When most moms will be dropping their kids off at school, I will be attending school with mine.

Growing up in the 80s and 90s, my
high school years are now long gone. As
I prepare for this upcoming year, I can’t
help but remember laughing out loud to
Rodney Dangerfield’s movie Back to
School, and the TV show Smart Guy,
knowing how similar our situations
have become. Not finding myself in the
embarrassing position of attending
college with a parent, or high school
with a 10-year-old brother, I laughed at
those fictional kids, thanking God I
wasn’t them.
The same will not be said by my
18-year-old son as he embarks on his
freshman year. The sitcom-like situation
will start this September, when we will
both be enrolled at St. Clair College.
Every teenager’s dream, right? To add to
the hilarity, his 15-year-old sister will
also be taking a class there.
As excited as I am to drive in to
school with my babies, meet up to eat
our homemade lunches and hang out
with all the same friends, a look of
horror crosses their faces at the thought.
