The Monster Inside Me
By: Trevor Scott
A project from Mr. Gildea’s Freshman Mythology Class
Students were tasked to
find a challenge they have
faced in their everyday
lives and write a narrative
taking that challenge and
turning it into a Hero’s
Journey where the main
character faces their fears
and concurs the monsters
within.
“This must be a mistake,” my father said to an
elegantly dressed man at our door, holding an
nicely written scroll, “My son has never been
trained as a man of the sword, he has lived with
us his whole life.”
“The king’s orders were clear, and you are
to be brought to him and trained by the best
swordsman in all of the empire. You will leave
tomorrow morning, shall you accept.” said the
man. Trevor was surprised that a mere 14 year
old boy would be requested by the king as a close
swordsman. His mind wandering, he glanced
outside and saw a large black horse, decorated
with a large colorful saddle. It was the largest
and most beautiful beast he had ever seen.
