What are you watching? And reading?
Guardians of the Galaxy( PG-13, Fantasy / Action, 2h 2m)
What’ s better than a ragtag band of intergalactic vigilantes? Nothing, that’ s what. Guardians of the Galaxy is centered around Peter Quill, a man making his way in the universe as a thief for hire. That is, however, until he encounters Gamora, Groot, Rocket Raccoon, and, later on, Drax the Destroyer, in a fight over some previously retrieved cargo. After the five reluctantly band together to escape prison, they stick together to save the universe from impending doom and an interconnected web of evil, becoming heroes in the process.
Guardians of the Galaxy has to be one of my favorite Marvel movies, and that’ s saying something for someone so devoted to superheroes. Marvel really outdid themselves with this movie, turning an unlikely and unloved band of vigilantes into recognizable heroes. Definitely look out for the soundtrack, it makes the movie ten times more awesome. Movie Rating: 4.5 / 5 Stars Say Anything( PG-13, Drama / Coming of Age, 1h 40m)
Say Anything is the story of Lloyd, an optimistic kick boxing enthusiast, trying to capture the heart of Diane, the gorgeous valedictorian, just after they graduate high school. He calls her and she surprisingly agrees to go on a date with him, which turns into more dates and eventually blooms into an awkwardly beautiful relationship. However, Diane’ s divorced father finds their love to be problematic and the pair soon experience troubled times not just between themselves, but with Diane’ s father as well.
Let me tell you straight off the bat, Say Anything is one of my favorite movies. Ever. This movie is definitely worth your time. It’ s witty, it’ s awkward, and it’ s everything you’ d hope a coming of age story would be. Just be ready for an emotional rollercoaster and several tearjerking moments. Movie Rating: 4 / 5 Stars Paper Towns by John Green
Paper Towns follows Quentin, who’ s been in love with his mysterious next door neighbor and ex-best friend, Margo, for most of his life. One night, out of the blue, she shows up to convince him to be her accomplice in a revenge scheme. He agrees, and the two are out until dawn making those who wronged the two of them pay for their crimes. The next day, Quentin gets to school only to find Margo missing. He and his friends soon find themselves trying to solve the mystery of where she went and who she really is.
While the movie for Paper Towns was good, the book was ten times better. The characters are a lot more developed and the jokes are absolutely astounding. One piece of advice, though- don’ t read this in class. I almost got in trouble for not being able to cease laughing. Book Rating: 8 / 10 Stars The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey
The aliens came in five waves, the first four decimating the world and leaving barely any survivors in their paths. One of those survivors just so happens to be Cassie Sullivan, an Ohio teenager and big sister. Her motive for continuing her journey is to see her little brother, who was taken by government officials to a military base. However, her past, along with an alien, are following close behind her.
I heard that the movie wasn’ t that good, but don’ t let that make you think that the book was awful- it wasn’ t. There were a few parts that dragged on, but this book had me at the edge of my seat and I’ m sure it’ ll have you on yours too. Book Rating: 7 / 10 Stars
