Form Extension and Rhythm An Empty Shell I initially approached this shell of a working model by inserting only horizontal pieces of white card. This exercise allowed me to work harmoniously with the buildings existing geometry, and consider how the space could be divided. Breaking the Boundaries More strips of white card were added to the existing sketch model to break the boundaries of the building in three places (roof, south and west face). Careful consideration was given to possible places for extension, with the north face rejected because of vehicle access/parking and the east face rejected because of the adjacent pedestrian walkway and residential zone. Extension Rhythm Vertical Horizontal Harmonious Axis N Visualising Space The process of photographing this model allowed me to visualise how clusters of white card strips could become areas of space. The harmonious extension of the sketch model beyond the buildings walls, naturally created pockets of outdoor space. These volumes could lend themselves to enclosed rooms, small pavilions or just an area of space suggested by outdoor fixtures and furniture. Pockets of outdoor space 9
