Water For Life

by Christi Callahan

Most of us can’t imagine not being able to turn on a faucet any time to fill a glass of water. Did you know that at least 663 million people lack access to safe drinking water? These communities are trapped in debilitating poverty because they constantly suffer from water-related diseases and parasites, and/or because they spend long stretches of their time carrying water over long distances.

The Living Water International website (water.cc) states: “Safe water removes the single heaviest burden from the lives of the poorest people in our world.” Not having to deal with this daily crisis means more time for school, work, life, and health- and allows individuals and communities to plan for tomorrow.

These statistics are what sparked our interest in participating in a mission trip to help dig a water well. So, in the first week of October, my husband Steve and I travelled to Guatemala with a group from our church to work with Living Water International.
