Kindergarten-First Grade classes at CDS learn to appreciate nature in many ways, but few experiences can match the wonder and excitement associated with growing their own food.

The K-1 garden is a child-led project from start-to-finish, where students are asked to plant, care for and harvest a variety of vegetables and herbs. The fun part comes after—when they’re finally able to sample the fruits of their labor and discuss the importance of healthy eating and caring for our natural resources.

In addition to outdoor fun and exercise, gardening aids in growth and development by encouraging better eating habits, teaching patience and responsibility, and providing an opportunity to practice reasoning, planning and organization skills.

The garden area also provides a quiet space for reflection and observation. First grader Milo takes note of which seeds have sprouted and which are still growing.
