The Hometown Treasure September 2013 | Page 23

wheeking excitedly when they hear me rustling the lettuce bag in the morning and run around in circles. The boys still aren’t eating fresh veggies very much but the girls didn’t either when I first got them. They’re so cute and have such interesting personalities! I’ve been trying to find homes for a couple of the girls (I decided I like the boys best!) but so far nothing much has come of it. Reconstructing their home has me reminded of one time I volunteered to help build a Habitat for Humanity House for some friends of mine. They had several kids and qualified for a Habitat House. I had done some construction work and knew how to swing a hammer with the best of them (as you all know, since that time I have built my parents garage with the help of my oldest brother) but I was one of the youngest there volunteering, and I was (and still am, for that matter) a female. I just don’t have as much strength as a male does! Darn that testosterone! So my job was to caulk where the wall joins against the floor. I walked all the way around that house inch by inch caulking until my fingers were sore. But the whole time I kept thinking, “This will help keep them warm in the winter and not let in as many drafts.” I have always liked volunteering and helping people. Snowbird SUBSCRIPTION! Feed My Starving Children is a non-profit organization that has been restoring children back to health all over the world for over 25 years. In 2012, over 1,000 volunteers from 19 area churches and from our community gathered over a two-day period to pack over 373,000 meals. The goal for 2013 is to pack 500,000 meals for hungry children. Many volunteers are needed to reach this goal. This year’s event will be held at the MEC (Michiana Event Center) in Howe on Friday, September 20, and Saturday, September 21, and will be broken up into 2-hour shifts on both days. The process is a simple and streamlined assembly line. The work is fun and easy and there are positions available for volunteers of all ages and capabilities.
