21st Century
Scholarship
Offices Closing
On August 1 at the LaGrange
Public Library Community Room, 21st
Century Scholars Regional Director,
Nikki Hutchinson, and Parent Coordinator, Kathleen English, announced
that the South Bend office which presently serves hundreds of 21st Century
Scholars in LaGrange County will be
closing on August 31 due to lack of
funding. The funding was lost when
program officials in Indianapolis failed
to apply on time for the federal grant
that provides salaries and other operating expenses. The statewide closings
will represent a significant reduction
in support services for schools, parents
and scholars. These include application
events, time-sensitive informational
mailings, educational workshops,
group campus visits, individual case
counseling and more. However, Ms.
Hutchinson, a 15-year veteran and
advocate of the program, emphasized
that the loss of this specific funding
will not reduce the separately-funded
tuition benefit for scholars.
Both presenters did speak repeatedly to the importance that
individuals, who hope to become or
who presently are scholars, must now
place on their own initiative in being
aware of and meeting all present and
yet to be announced changes in the
21st Century Scholars program. The
workshop included a detailed overview
of those changes especially as they
apply to scholars who will graduate
in 2015 and beyond. For example, all
future applications will be made on
line. Other changes include additional
requirements in the scholar’s pledge,
a reassessment of financial need in
the senior year of high school and a
shorter duration of time during which
the scholarship may be applied. It was
also noted that failure to meet any of
the specified or yet to be announced
or defined requirements and deadlines
would result in being dropped permanently from the program.
