National Champions
A Topeka men’s softball team
sponsored by D & R Miller Concrete,
Scott Routing and Forest River won
the Amateur Softball Association
(ASA) Men’s Eastern Class “E” National
Championship at Columbus, Ohio
over Labor Day weekend. The team is
a member of the Topeka Slow Pitch
Softball League. This marks the first
time ever that a Topeka softball team
has won a national championship.
Team members include, Daryl Beechy,
Davy Schwartz, Seth Wingard, Ben
Nissley, Joe Hostetler, Nathan Whetstone (all from Topeka), Steven Yoder
and Kyle Mast from Shipshewana
(Yoder was named the tournament’s
MVP), Dale Nissley and Matthew
Yutzy (Goshen), Myron Miller (Millersburg) and Leon Miller (Ligonier). The
team was coached by Daniel Lehman
from Goshen.
The Topeka team ended up playing
12 games in the tourney, including six
in a row (with no breaks) on the final
day. The championship game went
11 innings before it was decided with
Topeka coming out on top, 3-2.
An interesting rule of the tournament was that a fair ball hit over the
fence was an inning ending out.
