Eighth Grade Students Harvest Trees
Eighth grade students who choose
to enroll in Introduction to Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources
(taught by Mr. Baker and Mr. Bender)
had a unique opportunity this school
year while learning about forestry.
Typically students complete a forestry
project that includes the identification
of trees that are found in northern
Indiana and are commonly harvested
for lumber production. However, this
school year the students took their
forestry project one step further by
harvesting trees from the wood lot
behind the Jr. Sr. High School and
then processing the logs into lumber for future student woodworking
projects. The trees that were selected
to be harvested were determined to
be either dead but still usable for the
lumber (Ash) or damaged by high wind
(Hickory).
To complete the forestry unit of
study, the students will work in the
wood lot to improve the area where the
trees were harvested to encourage the
regeneration of hardwood trees.
