Westview School Board September 8, 2011 There is going to be a new class offered at Westview High School. It will be called Manufacturing Systems. The new class already has nineteen students enrolled. Rich Bender will be the teacher. The board felt that the new class would be an opportunity for Westview students. The advanced algebra class for eighth graders will be undergoing some changes. The new eighth graders will have to have at least a “B-“ to earn high school credits. If a student does not achieve at least a “B-“ the school will recommend that the student takes the class over. There is a new policy at Westview regarding animals. Service dogs will be allowed to all parts of Westview. This includes inside schools and on the grounds. The school cannot deny service dogs from entering anywhere. Some people have expressed concern about animals being at school sponsored events such as soccer games. However, service dogs are exempt from being told they are not allowed. There is also a new social network- Willard Kauffman Real Estate Fiduciary 2134 Elkhart Rd. Superintendent, Randy Zimmerly, does not see a problem with staff connecting with students through the use of the internet or cell phones. He doesn’t see a problem with it as long as it is school related. It is appropriate if it is about curriculum or sports. The board will revisit the issue next meeting. There was an amendment to the school budget that stated that bus replacement will not be capped at two busses per year. Every year is different and this will make the budget more flexible. There are also five new substitute bus drivers. The corporation was lacking substitute drivers which was creating issues. The issues are taken care of now. In technology news, the school might view the costs of technology as a utility. This means that one company would control and take care of all technological needs. This would cut down the amount of technology staff that the school needs. There are “lots of options,” according to Zimmerly. Westview has gained ninetyeight students from last school year. This has been the largest increase in enroll ment in Zimmerly’s thirteen years. Each office independently owned and operated.
