Shipshewana Town News The month of October draws to an end the summer and fall seasons that have hopefully reflected success for the area’s businesses. Saturday, November 9 brings the Light Parade, as well as the return to the Shipshewana Event Center of the iconic 50’s and 60’s music of the “Bulldogs”. The group went through a transition recently when “Spike” (Val Asay) had health issues and retired very suddenly from the band. The change has worked out very well as the group has broadened its music selection to include more of the 60’s music and is drawing a great following. Come join us on Saturday, November 9 at the Shipshewana Event Center and “Rock” with the Bulldogs and “Roll” through the Hostetler Auto Museum for FREE with the purchase of your “Bulldogs” ticket. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door. Get your tickets early by calling the Event Center at 260-768-3021 from 10 am to 4 pm. The Shipshewana Park Board completed the first of a number of work sessions developing plans to generate the financial backing from the community that will sustain parks and recreational opportunities for all our residents into the future. If you would like to participate in any one of a number of focus groups, please contact the Town at 260-768-4743. This is a huge opportunity to assist the Shipshewana community in developing and sustaining park and recreational facilities and programs the community wants. In other news, leaf pickup is on Mondays and Thursdays. Please help by putting your leaves in a pile at the edge of your property for pick up by the town staff. Please do not put grass clippings or branches in with your leaves. When you make payment for utility bills, make sure that your account number is on the check and your stub is with the payment. The Town Council continues to work on a number of issues including updating the traffic ordinance, determining the best approach to sidewalk repair and improvements, tree removal and street inventory and repair/replacement schedule. The Council will also be looking at initiating a Global by Mike Sutter Positioning System (GPS) project that will allow staff to easily locate all water, sewer, storm water lines, manholes and valves in lieu of looking at paper maps or relying on “institutional memory.” This project is long overdue and will take some very careful work by town staff. We are hoping that we can find a Trine University engineering student to do the “leg” work, help the town and add to his/her career development and resume. All of these undertakings will allow infrastructure to keep pace. Shipshewana is a dynamic community, but problems with the basic community framework will increase unless steps are taken to correct the deficiencies. To keep infrastructure current, it costs serious dollars, but the alternative is not a pretty sight and is graphically portrayed by the deterioration of many communities in the country. It’s our goal that everyone will “get on board” with these initiatives. 260 C North Village Dr. • Shipshewana, IN 46565 www.keepingtabs.uss • Office: 260.768.4760 Payroll Services & Accounting Services 1 hour of free business consulting This is your personal invitation to come see us at our office in the Troyer Saddlery building.
