Westview Is Again County 4-H/FFA Wildlife Habitat Champion
Left to right: Parker Fought, Jamar Weaver, Tarrin Beechy and Colton Feller.
Westview successfully defended its
title as sunny skies and seasonal temperatures marked the eighth annual
LaGrange County 4-H/FFA Wildlife
Habitat Evaluation competition on
October 4 at Pine Knob Park. It was
inaugurated in the spring of 2005 as a
joint venture of the Purdue Extension
Service and the county vocational agriculture teachers. Forty-eight youth
from the three county high schools
participated in this year’s event. It was
the fourth consecutive county title for
the Warriors who topped rival Prairie
Heights.
Dominating the top ten individuals with four of the five highest scorers,
Coach Paul Baker’s Warriors also had
three other teams in the county’s top
five. Parker Fought led the Warriors
with 368.5 points followed in order
by Colton Feller, Tarrin Beechy, and
Jamar Weaver.
The state Wildlife Habitat Evaluation contest is scheduled for October
20th at Purdue University. Westview
Photo submitted by Paul Baker
will be vying for its second state
championship.
The contest consists of four
components, a field management plan
in which students identify practices
that optimize the habitat for a specific
animal, selection of aerial photographs
that will mark the most suitable habitats, a photo identification of specific
animals, and a foods identification exercise that matches animals and their
preferred food sources.
