Westview School Board Community Calendar cont. from previous page by Luke Pamer The leading topic discussed at this month’s school board meeting was the grants the corporation receives to further the students education at Westview. They were presented by Michelle Grewe. The school received over two million dollars in grant money in 2012. This is over half a million more than last year. The school receives three federal grants and two state grants. The “Title One” grant for disadvantaged students is the largest grant the corporation receives. Grades kindergarten through sixth grade receives this grant. Another grant Westview receives is a grant to aid teacher improvement. “Title Three” is another financial aid the schools receive which goes towards students that use English as a second language. Another major issue that was discussed during the meeting was the auditorium lighting project. Westview High School principal, Rich Cory, advocated for the “green light” on starting the project. The auditorium would be receiving a lighting upgrade that included LED lights. The company “TPC Technologies” will be doing the installation. The lighting upgrade would help the school save money through energy conservation. When all of the lights are on during a performance, over 11,000 watts of power are being utilized. The new lights will only use around 1,500 total watts. It also provides the actors, actresses, and band members on stage with more comfort during auditorium performances.
