Local “Huskers” Pick Their Way to Success
Bremen, Indiana was the venue
for this year’s Indiana Corn Husking
Contest which was held on October
6. Several “huskers” from the Shipshewana and Topeka area, as well as a
Westview teacher/coach participated in
the competition.
Enos B. Miller from Shipshewana
garnered a first place finish in the
men’s senior division by husking a
little over 217 pounds in the allotted
twenty minutes. The following week af-
ter the contest, as he flexed his hands,
he said, “I’m still trying to recover.”
He continued, “This will probably be
my last year.” Duane Lambright from

Don Williams finished impressively
in their divisions as well. Duane, who
had been defeated last year by Clay
Geyer of Bremen, finished ahead of
Geyer this year with a second place

Williams husked his way to a second
place finish too. Mr. Williams said,
“I actually started picking at my first
contest in LaGrange in 1994.” He went
on to say, “I think I’ve picked in sixteen
of the last eighteen contests and won
three state titles in different divisions.
This was the first year I competed in
the Men’s open division. I had some
husking penalties because the corn
was still a little green.” He continued,
“Overall though, I thought the corn at
the contest was pretty good considering the drought we had this year. The
