Shipshewana’s centennial celebration
provided an additional venue to promote the popular tourist destination.
Under the sponsorship of the Shipshewana Centennial Jubilee Committee a
collection of stories of the community
were complied in a book entitled “A
Patchwork Sampler.” That publication
is still available from the Shipshewana
Area Historical Society located in the
old Farver School.
According to a 1992 Mayfest
publication, the name “Mayfest” was
actually borrowed from the annual
Mayfest promotion done by Arlene
Shannon, owner of the Greenfield Herb
Barn in Shipshewana. Shannon moved
the business to the area from her home
in Oak Park, Illinois, where she had
operated out of her home. She got the
idea from an old English custom. “May
1 is the traditional celebration of the
beginning of spring,” Shannon said,
“and since herbs are associated with
ancient festivals, it made sense.”
