Westview Team Wins FFA Livestock Judging Competition With three individual performers in the top five leading the way, Westview captured the 2011 LaGrange County 4-H/FFA Career Development Event March 30. 48 students from the three county schools participated in this year’s event which was marked by seasonal weather and a variety of judging samples. The competition began at the Young family farms southeast of LaGrange where the students evaluated classes of market cattle and hogs. The contest then shifted to the Gary Yoder farm where contestants judged a class of sheep before winding up at the 4-H Fairgrounds with a class of Boer goats, a hearty, popular South African breed produced for its meat value. The students also presented oral justification or reasons for their animal rankings. The Westview team, coached by Paul Baker, amassed 1079 points to outdistance Prairie Heights FFA with 1045. A second Westview team finished third with 1037 points. Lakeland FFA scored 1012 to finish fourth. continued on page 44 Mrs. Spencer’s students enjoying the weekly nutritious snack that Photos Submitted the PTO provides.
