The novice 2010-2011 team (9, 10, 11th grade) had only two veteran competitors. Most senior year members dropped active competition due to the demands of jobs and course loads. Despite those demands many of the veteran senior competitors volunteered after school to coach and tutor the 12 new members. Juggling their time and skills between music programs, sports and academics, the young team worked hard developing their speaking and performance skills to compete every Saturday with dozens of other more experienced high school teams from across Indiana. Forensics encompasses many disciplines and a wide range of opportunities for a student’s self-expression to blossom and grow. The events include formal debate, current event discussions, reading, speaking and dramatic competitions which pit a student’s individual talents with novice as well as veteran competitors. By the end of this season, the young Westview team’s ten novice members worked hard and their efforts paid off.
