NIPSCO Proposes
Improvement Project
The Reynolds-Topeka Electric
System Improvement Project is a 6 year
project that proposes to strengthen
Indiana’s electric system and provide
improved access to wind and solar
renewable energy sources through the
construction of a new 100 mile electrical transmission line that will connect
NIPSCO’s Reynolds substation (in
Reynolds, IN), Burr Oak substation (in
Burr Oak, IN) and Hiple Substation
(near Topeka).
The project is currently in the
Study Phase, which means NIPSCO is
looking at an area to conduct further
studies to determine the best route for
the project. Public input is a critical
component of this project and open
houses were held during the month
of February in Topeka, Nappanee,
Plymouth and Monticello (the towns
most affected by the proposed project.)
According to NIPSCO, the open house
in Topeka was well attended and many
questions, from the citizens, were addressed. The next round of open houses
will be in July. Dates for those open
houses will be announced later this
spring. During the July open houses
several potential routes will be presented, and again NIPSCO will be soliciting input from the public in order to
make the final route selection.
NIPSCO is advocating that the new
line would create new jobs and business for local suppliers, increase property taxes paid to local governments
by NIPSCO, improve the reliability of
the electric system in our area, provide
anticipated cost savings to customers from access to lower cost energy,
and improve access to wind and solar
renewable energy sources that reduce
greenhouse gases.
Westview School Board
There is a plan in the works to
create six new positions in the Westview school corporation. However, the
positions will be filled by teachers who
already have positions. They will be
“instructional coaches.” They would
be teaching for 50% of their day and
being an instructional coach the other
50% of the day. This would be a grant
supported position. An instructional
coach would be a teacher who would
receive leadership and professional
training who would then pass on the
knowledge to the other teachers in the
corporation. School board president,
Gerald Lee said it would be “teachers
helping teachers.”
The school has tried this in the
past and believe under the leadership
of Michelle Grewe, it will thrive. School
superintendent, Randy Zimmerly,
