located at 1426 W 300 N in Albion and is home to a mix of 90 big cats, bears, primates, birds, reptiles and more. According to the executive director of Black Pine, Lori Gagan, Black Pine is a Professional Animal Retirement Center (PARC). Black Pine’s animal population includes tigers, leopards, lions, cougars, servals, wolves, foxes, bears, monkeys, birds, reptiles, and more. About 70% of the animals residing at Black Pine were kept as “pets” in private homes and were surrendered when they grew too large, too aggressive, or were otherwise not suitable to be kept in a home. The remaining 30% were confiscated or recovered by animal control agencies, many of them kept illegally. As a true sanctuary, Black Pine does not buy, sell, trade, or breed animals, or use them for entertainment. Sanctuary tours cost $7 to $12 per person depending on age and the type House Boat docked on Lake Wawasee and time of tour selected. Groups of 20 or more may be eligible for discounts. Special events and other programs are also scheduled annually. Tour options vary seasonally. From Memorial Day through Labor Day guided tours are offered for all ages daily at 11:00 am.
