Topeka Town News
As the start of summer is
just around the corner, things are
starting to pick-up around town. The
South Main project is close to being
completed with a newly resurfaced
road and new sidewalk approaches
that meet ADA standards. You will also
notice we are working on other projects
for later this year.
Also, as you can see, the building is
coming down at the corner of Lake and
Main St. The progress has been slow,
but the end product is sure to look
good.
If you look along East Lake St. and
at both parks you will notice that the
“Flower Girl,” Rachel has been hard at
work planting flowers for the summer
season. If you see her out, make sure to
compliment her on a job well done. The
flowers add a beautiful touch to the
town’s landscape.
The town has made some improvements to the sidewalks at the west
park. The cement approach leading
to the restrooms was fixed for easier
access in and out. We added steps
towards the south end of the parking
area to better access the pavilion and
playground area, and at the north end
we connected the sidewalks together
by Ron Eash
making it easier for people parked at
the park to get to the little league diamonds, and the main sidewalk.
The Topeka Fire Department will
be celebrating their 100 year anniversary. The department will be holding
a community picnic to celebrate 100
years of service. Join them for lunch
on June 16th at the Topeka east park
starting at 11:00 am for food and fun.
Also on hand will be a 1930 Model “A”
Fire Truck originally owned by the
Topeka Fire Department.
Fourth of July will be here soon,
and we will be getting ready for all the
celebrations and activities in town,
the road run, kids games, the parade,
softball all day long, and don’t forget
food alley and fireworks! Let’s also
remember, “One flag, one heart, one
hand, One Nation Evermore!”
Shipshewana Ministerial Association Presented With Grant
Steve Scott-Welty , LaGrange
County Community Foundation
Board of Directors Vice President
and co-owner of Galarina Folk Arts
in Shipshewana, recently attended a
meeting of the Shipshewana Ministerial Association and formally awarded
association members with a grant in
the amount of $7,223.77. Through
the month of March, the Community
Foundation challenged local residents
with a dollar-for-dollar match of up to
$2000 on all gifts sent to the Community Foundation in support of the
ministerial association’s emergency
fund. The emergency fund is used by
the association to help local families
in crisis with energy bills and other
needs. Local donors responded enthusiastically in support of the association’s efforts and gave over $5000.
This amount was matched with the
promised $2000. Association members
expressed sincere appreciation for the
many donor gifts and the foundation
match as the emergency fund had been
depleted to approximately $100.
