by Harold D. Gingerich The Story of the Topeka Quilt Show & Sale and the Shipshewana Quilt Festival Every quilt is unique; every quilt lover has a story. Quilting is a tradition that has been handed down from mother to daughter. Many of these quilts have become treasured family heirlooms lovingly passed down from generation to generation. “This was my great grandmother’s wedding quilt.” Or, “My mother’s aunt pieced this when she was working as a night nurse.” How about, “One winter when I was a boy I painted the quilt blocks, helped pick out the material, and Mama quilted it for me.” In many respects quilts and quilting is a part of the fabric of our lives in this area. Early in 1977, the Indiana State Board of Health and LaGrange County issued an ultimatum under the sanitary bedding law. The ban not only prohibited the sale of Amish quilts at sales and in stores, but would not allow their return to the individuals who had made them. No one was allowed to sell quilts without a $25.00 license and “content 2Fw>( ?????7V7F? ?7GV?????V?FVB?V?&W"?bV??G0?g&??Gv?6??6?Wv?7F?&W2?v?V??6??F7FVBgFW"F?R??7V7F?.( ?2f?6?B???w&?vR6?V?G?&?6V7WF?"?6?V????FW"?F?V???v?66????6?72?`??cR?6??VB?B( ?'7W&B?B&?F?7V??W>( ???FW"vV?B??F?6??( ?B????2??P?6??R'W&VV7&N( ?2?FV?b6??WF???rF??F??( b??( ????B&?WBF?&?6V7WFR6??V&?G???F??2GV?"F???~( ??f?'GV?FV??F?R&?&B?b?V?F??7FV?VBF?&V6????BF?R7G&??r&V7F???6???r?WB?`???'F?W&???F???????&6???6??V`??bF?R7FFR&?&B?b?V?F?( ?2&VFF??p?F?f?6???'V?VBF?BV??G2?FRf? ?( ??V??&&???"f?"FV6?&F?fRW'?2??W2???( ?vW&R( ??'Bf?&?( ??B6?V?@?&R6??B??W7BF?&R??F?R6fR6?FR??6?&?7F?W"?Bf?"&VFF??r?6V?6P??B&Vv?W6??r6??FV?G2Fw2??v?V?6??6?Wv?7FFR&????rV??W2fVFW&?6f??w2?'V??@?'&?6???F?V??7VRFV6?FVBF????fRF?R6??r?B6?RF?F?R6???V??G?&?????F?R&??&6V?V?B??F?&?2?vv&B?BvV?Wf?WfR?V????g&??F?RF?V?V??FVB?WF??F?7@?6?W&6??F6?VB???B&Vv??V???p?7VR??vRF?Rw&?v??rWfV?B?v?V??F?R?WF??F?7G26???WFVBF?V?"?Wp?fV???w6?????????B?7VR6?VBF?P??WF??F?7B?F?W2?bF?W?v?V?B6??6?FW ?7??6?&??rF?R??V?6??r?F?W?66WFVBF?R?ffW"?BF?RF?V?V??@?6??rb6?Rv2??6FVBF?W&RF?&?Vv??#r?6???F?76???fVR???FF?F???F?R6???76?????6?W2??&?f?FVBV??Vv???6??Rf?"F?Rw&?W?F??W&FR???W?6W72gV?G2vW&Rv?fV??F?f&?WG??b?76???&??V7G2?V??@??VFv??r?B6??WF?F???v2f??FVB??2vV?Wf?WfR?V???6?B????????FW'f?Wr?( ?vR&Rg&?BF?R?6???B6??R?F?W'2v?V?B??B6??R?( ??fW"F?R7??bF?&VR?V'2??&Vv?????r????b?7VR6?&?7F?W"??F?&?2?vv&B??BvV?Wf?WfR?V????vW&R'B?b??&?F??W2Vff?'@??
