The Lions have also given huge contributions to the overall community in Topeka. President Morag Miller looked to the future with a call for new members and an initiative for preventing blindness through better early detection of diabetes. The club plans to sponsor a blood screening for diabetes as one of its next projects. June 2011 Topeka Lions Club Celebrates 25th Anniversary The Topeka Lions Club turned 25 this spring and held a dinner to celebrate on Saturday, May 14. The Topeka Lions are also busy making plans for their next event on May 28. Everyone is invited to join the Topeka Lions Club at the Maple Lane Wildlife Park, where the club is sponsoring half price admission and having a BBQ with all proceeds going to send a Topeka Elementary School student to Diabetes Camp. Two Topeka Lions were honored with special awards during the dinner. Ann Woodworth was presented with the Beacon of Hope Award and DeWayne Bontrager was presented with the Melvin Jones Award for their exceptional service. Bontrager was also presented with a special pin for being the only charter member who is still an active member. Several speakers included the Zone Chair Alana Kauffman and Past International Director Dave Fiandt, who talked about the key accomplishments of the club over the years.
