Westview School Board by Jerry Hostetler Brian Christner of Wolcottville was hired as the new Director of Finance for the Westview School Corporation. Christner will take the place of Bob Evans who resigned at the end of the school year to take a job in the Goshen School system. Christner comes to Westview after serving as treasurer at Liberty Homes for seventeen years. He is married to Westview graduate Lorilee (Mast) Christner and they have three children. In addition to accepting the resignation of Bob Evans and approving the hiring of Brian Christner, the board also approved text book fees for next school year, no changes are expected. In other school board business, Jim Hostetler, Director of Buildings, Grounds and Transportation, reported that some portions of the high school roof need to be repaired and that he would like to get quotes or bids to do the work. Bob Evans reported that the lighting system in the high school auditorium needs to be replaced and the cost could be in the $70,000 range. Quotes for the new equipment will be presented at the July meeting. Superintendant Randy Zimmerly presented a letter from the Town of Shipshewana stating the town would no longer provide a crossing guard for the intersection of West Middlebury Street and State Street. After discussion, Zimmerly was asked to contact Shipshewana town officials to ask the reason for their decision. The next Westview School Board meeting will be held Thursday, July 19. Topeka Town News It’s been a busy last couple of months as the Town board has signed tax abatements for three local companies in town that have seen growth in business. S&H Metal, Crossroads RV and Nishikawa Cooper LLC have all increased production, or had the need to update equipment. We’d like to thank all our businesses in town for their continued support of Topeka. The first rounds of projects are complete in town with the South Main project and part of Hawpatch, with more projects to begin later this summer. The Town of Topeka will be hosting the 4th of July Celebrations on Wednesday the 4th. We invite everyone to come out and enjoy all the activities being held that day. The annual road run and fun walk will start off the day, followed by kid’s games in the park. The garden tractor pulls start at 10:00 am (new location on Babcock St.) and the horse and pony pulls will be held in the Sale barn arena. Food will be available all day long. The annual softball tourney will be held at East Park all day. The pa- by Ron Eash rade, starting at 5:30 pm, will feature our nation’s flag with the theme, “It’s a Grand ol’ Flag.” Then immediately following the parade will be the buggy races on North Main St. The day will be topped off with music in the East Park and fireworks at dusk. Come enjoy, and have a safe and fun 4th of July Holiday. In closing, “A perfect summer day is when the sun is shining, the wind is blowing, the birds are singing and the lawn mower is broken”. Tiffany’s Celebrates 25 Years Tiffany’s Restaurant in Topeka celebrated its 25th anniversary in style on June 6th with a classic car cruise-in, customer appreciation discounts, and a live remote broadcast with WFRN-FM personality Cody Collier. Collier also participated in the cruise-in by driving his classic car to the event. When Fritz and Tina Helmuth purchased the business 25 years ago it was little more than a drive-in featuring hamburgers and ice cream. They named it “Tiffany’s” in honor of their daughter whose birthday also happens to be on June 6th. Over the years they added to their menu as well as the building. Today it is famous for their pies and Amish-Mennonite cooking. photo and story by Harold Gingerich Gary Yoder, Tiffany’s manager, stated that some 63 classic cars and trucks showed up for the event. They also served up 320 free hotdogs to the children who came to play on the inflated play equipment that had been rented for the occasion.
