The event will feature a variety of free live entertainment this year in addition to the hourly regularly-scheduled activities. Traditionally, at a Relay for Life, there are different activities for relay participants each hour for the entire 24 hours of the event. This year’s theme is Birthday Party, and most hours are themed around specific birthdays. The Opening Ceremonies will take place at 9 am on June 25 followed by the Survivor and Caregiver laps and Survivor Breakfast. In addition to the hourly activities, live music will be provided by four different artists on Saturday, June 25. On Saturday afternoon, the Matt & Jason Band from Eden Worship Center in Topeka will be performing their Contemporary Christian songs. From Cornerstone Baptist Church in Shipshewana, Psalm 150 will take the stage with their Contemporary Country Christian selections, also on Saturday afternoon. At 6 pm, Andrew Bartlett and the Mongo United Methodist Church Praise Band will entertain the Relay audience and participants. The Luminaria Ceremony will begin at 10 pm with the Luminaria displays lining the track in honor and memory of those diagnosed with cancer. After the Luminaria Ceremony, Andy Scheidler will get the overnight walking started with his upbeat techno music variety. Closing ceremonies will take place at 9 am on Sunday, June 26. Additional activities, including the hourly schedule, can be viewed on the event website, www.relayforlife.org/lagrangecountyin, on the Day of Event Details page. While the Relay for Life is a fundraiser for American Cancer Society, there is no charge to attend the event and enjoy the activities, including the live music. All community members are encouraged to stop by. There is also still time to form or join a team by going to the event website. Teams have a member on the track “relaying” for the entire 24 hours to celebrate cancer survivors, remember those affected by cancer, and fight back against this disease. In LaGrange County, the American Cancer Society estimates 122 will be diagnosed with cancer in 2011, and much of the money raised by the LaGrange County Relay for Life goes to help those locally.
