July 2011
Healthy Hearts, Healthy Homes
by Brenda Yoder, Education & Program Director at Elijah Haven Crisis Intervention Center
this commitment not just in word, but in deed. This
month, the Shipshewana community is putting this core
community value in action by drawing awareness of
peace and non-violence in the home. On Saturday, July
30, a percentage of all sales at the Davis Mercantile will
help fund programs at Elijah Haven Crisis Intervention
Center for those affected by domestic violence in the
county and surrounding areas. Events throughout
the day will be centered on awareness, prevention,
and community support for domestic violence.
Also throughout the day, The Shipshewana Police
Department will be presenting RADkids, a personal
safety training program for kids, at both 1:00 and 3:00
in the commons area east of the Mercantile. From 4:305:30, there will be Gospel Concert in the Mercantile
Theater featuring the Emma Men’s Chorus and other
local groups. Information will be available all day on
domestic violence services in the area.
Statistics show that almost everyone reading
the Hometown Treasurer probably has a personal
connection with someone affected by domestic violence
– a child, sibling, co-worker, student, or friend. Just
like for parent’s, it’s good to know you’re not alone
in raising children in the community, those affected
by domestic violence need to know they, too, are not
alone. As a community, let’s show our support for
peace and non-violence in the home by supporting
the events and the merchants at the Davis Mercantile
on Saturday, July 30. Just as a village helps raise a child,
so can a village raise a hand in supporting members
among us who often suffer in silence. Together, let’s
raise awareness of peace and non-violence in the place
nearest to us, our homes and community.

“It takes a village to raise a child.”
This was one of Hillary Clinton’s statements at
the beginning of her term as First Lady of the United
States. When I first heard it, I was taken aback at her
sentiment ... ”a village was not going to raise my child,
that was my job” ... I remember thinking as a young
parent. I didn’t like the idea of others outside of home
having a more important role in their development
than my husband and I. However, as I’ve grown as a
parent, adult, community member, I have learned
this statement is not all bad. I’ve seen the positive
influences community members have made in the
life of our family ... school teachers, coaches, Sunday
School teachers, friends ... the list could go on. Our
family has benefited from people being involved in
the life of our family, cheering us on when we do well,
standing by us in the hard times, and walking along
side us when the going gets tough. It’s good to know
you’re not alone.
The community served by the Hometown Treasurer
is a unique community committed to peace and nonviolence. It’s a blessing raising children here because
