January 2011 Phone: 260-463-4901 • Fax 888-439-6528 • The Hometown Treasure Davis Mercantile Fifth Saturday To Benefit Local Family Wayne and Leora Miller, owners of The Daily Bread Restaurant located on the third floor of The Davis Mercantile, will be the recipients of the proceeds from the first Davis Mercantile Fifth Saturday Community Day. The merchants of The Davis Mercantile will be donating a percentage of their sales on January 29, 2011 to help with the ongoing needs of Wayne and Leora Miller, victims of a tragic fire that occurred at their residence on June 30, 2010. In addition to what the merchants will be donating, family and friends have joined together to offer events to be held at The Davis Mercantile to help raise additional funds for Wayne and Leora. There will be a cookie walk in which individuals may purchase an empty box at The Daily Bread for a ten dollar donation and then meander through 20 different shops to pick up 20 different cookies to fill their box. Guy Thompson’s Mousetrap Puppets will be presenting the puppet show entitled “Jack Frost Winter Wonderland” for a free will donation and The Abundant Life Ministries Worship team will be singing. One hundred percent of the proceeds from these activities will benefit Wayne and Leora Miller. The Shipshewana Fire Department will be present to talk with the public about fire safety and prevention and will be giving away free smoke detectors while supplies last. On June 30, 2010, Leora Miller was awakened to smoke filling their family home. Leora ran over a mile to her closest neighbor, clad only in the clothes on her back, to obtain help. In the process of escaping her burning home, she was burned severely over a large portion of her body and suffered damage to her lungs. She spent several weeks in the burn unit at a Fort Wayne, Indiana hospital struggling to stay alive. The recuperation and rehabilitation has been long and painful for Leora but she is quick to share with numerous family and friends that her strength to keep on going can only be attributed to have come from the Lord. Page 14 January 3 February 21 Tournaments Will Be Held In The Topeka Elementary Gym on Monday evenings, 6 p.m. ongoing at this time. The Millers have operated The Daily Bread restaurant for two years at The Davis Mercantile. Although the 5th Saturday Community Day program is to assist non-profit organizations, it was a unanimous decision among the merchants of The Davis Mercantile to make an exception with the first event and assist Wayne and Leora Miller. The Millers hold a special spot in their hearts since they are considered to be a part of The Davis Mercantile family. Wayne and Leora’s example of steadfast faith and perseverance have been an inspiration to many of the employees in the building. Proceeds raised will be donated to a trust fund established and administered by Abundant Life Ministries to meet the ongoing needs for Wayne and Leora Miller. The building will be open January 29, 2010 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and the public is encouraged to come show their support and offer words of encouragement to Wayne and Leora Miller at the first of The Davis Mercantile 5th Saturday Community Days.
