The son of Bob and Melany Weaver of Shipshewana, Daniel is a freshman at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan where he is studying engineering. Younce is the son of Randy and Becky Younce of LaGrange and is a freshman at Indiana University-South Bend where he is studying business management. 4-H is a youth development program whose mission is to help young people build life skills through participation in hands on projects and leadership opportunities with the support of adult volunteers. Students in county elementary schools have been receiving enrollment information through their local schools. Enrollment materials are also available to junior and senior high students through their school offices. Also, LaGrange County 4-H leaders are hoping home school families will add 4-H as an informal education option in their lessons. Home school families can incorporate 4-H projects into their academic lessons. Electronic enrollment was introduced last year and is once again a fast, secure and convenient option. Families have the option of utilizing electronic enrollment and paying the $15 per member state program fee online. Through informal education, 4-H is a voluntary youth development program designed to address the interests of boys and girls through the provision of contemporary as well as traditional projects. Some of the newer projects include computers, consumer clothing, creative writing, reading, recycling, scrapbooking, shooting sports education and sports. There are still many projects available for traditional 4-H enthusiasts including foods, sewing and animal husbandry. Returning in 2013 will be the 4-H Llama project featuring llamas and alpacas. To obtain additional club, project, or enrollment information, you may contact the Purdue University Extension Office in LaGrange at 499-6334, or visit the 4-H development link on the Extension’s web site at www.extension.purdue. edu/lagrange.
