Chasing
a Dream

This is northern Indiana, the land of Hoosier
Hysteria where most little boys grow up with a
basketball in their hands and dream of greatness on
the court. Karch Bachman took a different path.
At the tender age of two and a
half, he slipped on his first pair of
hockey skates and slid onto the ice,
and no one has been able to keep up
with him since. “When he was four
going on five, he was playing with kids
three years older than him, and it was
because of his speed,” said his father
Kurt. “He was so fast. We knew there
was something going on.”
Karch, now 15, is the son of Kurt
and Roxanne Bachman, and a brother
to Karis Bachman, 12. Already widely
traveled in his hockey career, he has
played across the US and Canada in
cities like Edmonton, Quebec, Toronto,
Buffalo, St. Louis, and Detroit. In 2011
and 2012, his club teams in Detroit
won back-to-back Michigan
state titles, and finished
third and second in the national tournament. In March,
Karch will have the opportunity to be drafted into the
Ontario Hockey League, the highest league in North
America in which a 16-year-old can participate.
