Shipshewana Town News
The Town of Shipshewana Downtown Revitalization Plan Steering
Committee and the Town Council
would like to take this opportunity to
thank everyone in the community who
attended the Public Meetings held on
Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at the
Town Hall.
The planning project consultant,
Steve Metzer of DLZ, presented a
variety of information, including an
overview of the study process, results
from a survey presented at meetings
on August 4, 2011, issues identified
by the consultant, and a variety of potential options to improve the Town of
Shipshewana for all stakeholders.
Your attendance and input on the
various options presented will be used
to make recommendations, identify
phasing priorities and to seek funding following adoption of the plan by
the Town Council. We are hopeful that
with your support, our community will
be able to improve the “Shipshewana
Experience” for the residents, tourists,
and business owners alike. The ultimate goal of the Downtown Revitalization Plan is to make Shipshewana
a better place to live, work, shop, and
visit. Your continued interest and involvement in this important planning
effort is sincerely appreciated.
The Town Council and employees
are excited to announce the restructuring of the town’s Utility Division. In order to improve employee performance,
inspire and build excitement for the
future, increase productivity, and

improve the bottom line – our Utility
Division employees have volunteered
to take on the additional responsibilities associated with streamlining the
overall operation.
The new Utility Division will
consist of three distinct departments,
as follows: 1. Buildings and Grounds
Department 2. Street Department and
3. Utilities Department. The Buildings and Grounds Department will
now be led by Mr. Tim Sheteron; the
newly formed Street Department will
be headed by Mr. Dave Palenchar; and
the newly reorganized Utilities Department, which includes operational
control of both the Waste Water Treatment Facility and the Water Plant, will
be managed by Mr. Boyd Jones.
We are grateful for the specialized skills, community loyalty, short
and long-term potential and strength
of character that these leaders bring
to their positions with our town; and
we are committed to providing each
employee with the tools and resources
to be successful. We have recognized
the need to be flexible and responsive
to the ever changing needs of our community and we are confident that these
department changes will benefit both
the town and the employees. You can
look forward to learning more about
each of the Superintendents and their
respective departments in upcoming
issues of the Hometown Treasure.
Now that Winter Weather has officially arrived we need to provide community members and residents with a
by Sheryl Kelly
friendly reminder that the town has an
ordinance that requires snow and ice to
be removed from the sidewalk in front
of each house and commercial building by 6:00 p.m. in the evening of each
day. If you have an elderly neighbor
or snowbird on your street, and, you
are able, please consider giving them
a helping hand with snow removal.
Random acts of kindness are always
welcome.
Should a severe winter weather
event occur, a “Snow Emergency” will
be in effect for the Town of Shipshewana, whenever the National Weather
Service issues a Winter Storm Warning
for Lagrange County. The following
streets have parking restrictions posted on them during the Winter Storm
Warning. “No Parking” times are from
12:01 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. to allow the
Street Department to clear the roadway. Violators may have their vehicles
towed at the Owners expense, if they
remain on the street during the posted
“No Parking” hours. Middlebury Street
from State Street to Talmadge Street;
State Street from Middlebury Street to
Sulky Downs; Talmadge Street from
Middlebury Street to Main Street.
The downtown streets of Main,
Morton, and Harrison are also requested but not posted as “No Parking”
streets. (These are mostly commercial areas with only one exception on
Harrison Street.). Your assistance and
continued cooperation during a “Snow
Emergency” is sincerely appreciated.
