Shipshewana Town News The Town of Shipshewana Downtown Revitalization Plan Steering Committee and the Town Council would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone in the community who attended the Public Meetings held on Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at the Town Hall. The planning project consultant, Steve Metzer of DLZ, presented a variety of information, including an overview of the study process, results from a survey presented at meetings on August 4, 2011, issues identified by the consultant, and a variety of potential options to improve the Town of Shipshewana for all stakeholders. Your attendance and input on the various options presented will be used to make recommendations, identify phasing priorities and to seek funding following adoption of the plan by the Town Council. We are hopeful that with your support, our community will be able to improve the “Shipshewana Experience” for the residents, tourists, and business owners alike. The ultimate goal of the Downtown Revitalization Plan is to make Shipshewana a better place to live, work, shop, and visit. Your continued interest and involvement in this important planning effort is sincerely appreciated. The new Utility Division will consist of three distinct departments, as follows: 1. Buildings and Grounds Department 2. Street Department and 3. Utilities Department. The Buildings and Grounds Department will now be led by Mr. Tim Sheteron; the newly formed Street Department will be headed by Mr. Dave Palenchar; and the newly reorganized Utilities Department, which includes operational control of both the Waste Water Treatment Facility and the Water Plant, will be managed by Mr. Boyd Jones. We are grateful for the specialized skills, community loyalty, short and long-term potential and strength of character that these leaders bring to their positions with our town; and we are committed to providing each employee with the tools and resources to be successful. We have recognized the need to be flexible and responsive to the ever changing needs of our community and we are confident that these department changes will benefit both the town and the employees. You can look forward to learning more about each of the Superintendents and their respective departments in upcoming issues of the Hometown Treasure. Now that Winter Weather has officially arrived we need to provide community members and residents with a by Sheryl Kelly friendly reminder that the town has an ordinance that requires snow and ice to be removed from the sidewalk in front of each house and commercial building by 6:00 p.m. in the evening of each day. If you have an elderly neighbor or snowbird on your street, and, you are able, please consider giving them a helping hand with snow removal. Random acts of kindness are always welcome. Should a severe winter weather event occur, a “Snow Emergency” will be in effect for the Town of Shipshewana, whenever the National Weather Service issues a Winter Storm Warning for Lagrange County. The following streets have parking restrictions posted on them during the Winter Storm Warning. “No Parking” times are from 12:01 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. to allow the Street Department to clear the roadway. Violators may have their vehicles towed at the Owners expense, if they remain on the street during the posted “No Parking” hours. Middlebury Street from State Street to Talmadge Street; State Street from Middlebury Street to Sulky Downs; Talmadge Street from Middlebury Street to Main Street. The downtown streets of Main, Morton, and Harrison are also requested but not posted as “No Parking” streets. (These are mostly commercial areas with only one exception on Harrison Street.).
