This program is very near and dear
to the heart of Deb Seman. She shared
a moment that she had with her mother shortly before she passed, “The last
meaningful conversation that I had
with my mom (Geraldine Prisock), it
was a Wednesday and she passed away
the following Saturday and she said,
You know we’ve done a lot for people
with disabilities in the county over the
years, but there’s still a lot to be done.
Look how tired you are and you’ve only
taken care of me, around the clock, for
six weeks. Think about our families
that go through this day in and day out
365 days a year and never see a light
at the end of the tunnel. You have to
make respite care a reality.” And that
was our last conversation before she
passed.” Emotionally, Deb concluded
by saying, “It took on special meaning
for me.”
According to Deb, Respite Care is a
planned, temporary care of an individual with a disability when the primary
caregiver is not available or simply
needs a break. It is available for as few
as 4 hours or up to 2 weeks at a time,
which allows the care givers the “gift
of time” to use in whatever capacity
that is most helpful to them and their
family; a respite from the inherent
demands of constant care.
Deb’s mother’s dream became a
reality when The Arc of LaGrange County
opened a respite home and named it
in her honor, The Geraldine C. Prisock Memorial Respite Care Home. The
home is fully accessible, contains five
private bedrooms, has a wheelchair
roll-in shower or a parker bath tub,
that makes it possible for an individual
confined to a wheelchair or that has
limited upper-body muscle strength
to have a tub bath. It is also equipped
