Topeka Town News — From The Clerk’s Desk
by DeWayne Bontrager, Town Clerk
We are pleased to report the recent message from
Debi Kennedy, Community Outreach Coordinator for
Francine’s Friends Mobil Mammography.
“It was a great day for our first visit to Topeka. We
were able to screen 14 women, 12 of which were funded
through Francine’s Friends program. It shows that
there is truly a need in Topeka and I would love to have
the opportunity to do this on an annual basis.” Debi
and I have started planning on the next appearance
in Topeka.
The 700 South project is coming to completion. The
final striping, berming, seeding, etc will take some time.
We commend API Construction for their commitment
and steady work in getting the paving done ahead of
schedule. By now, most of us have already forgotten
the inconvenience during construction.
The Common Wage and Construction Committee
meeting was held July 28 in the Town Hall in preparation
for the South Main Street water line replacement and
some paving.
Another short term inconvenience. This project
is essential in maintaining water supply up to date.
This line was put in place in 1926 and is aging (needs
replacing for residential/industrial water supply) and
adequate fire protection along with the highly rated
Fire Department which gives a preferred rate on all
insurance premiums. The Town Council and Water
Supt. plan continuously on these water improvements.

Take notice of the flowers and landscape in Parks
and East Lake Street (Town Hall). Rachael Schrock is
to be commended for her work. So often we take for
granted this work since we see it every day. Take time
to thank and encourage Rachael. People from other
communities have stopped in the office to comment
on the beauty the flowers provide.
Keep in mind the Town Convention to be held the
second week in August. Exact date has not yet been
determined. Watch for posters and notices for time,
date, and location.
Several residents have filed for the Clerk-Treasurer
position and two Town Council positions. All of the
positions open are for four year terms. Registered
voters and residents are eligible to vote. Plan to attend.
These candidates appreciate your support.
During these hot summer months we remind you
that Topeka has summer sewage rates during July,
August, and September. The August, September, and
October billing will not exceed January, February and
March billing of that year. That should help when you
water lawn/garden, wash car, etc.
School begins in session late August. New traffic
challenges. Be alert.
“If all my possessions were taken from me with
one exception, I would choose to keep the power of
communication, for by it I would soon regain all the
rest.”
