VPO Opens in
Shipshewana
The U.S. Postal Service’s Manager
of Post Office Operations, Larry Dauby
was in Shipshewana in March to open
the thirty-third Village Post Office in
the Greater Indiana District at Town
& Country Hardware. Town & Country Hardware has been in business for
over 50 years in Shipshewana. Current
owner, Kenneth Myers, is in his sixth
year as owner.
Through friends and other business owners, Myers had learned of
the Postal Service’s Village Post Office
(VPO) model and its success in rural towns like Shipshewana. Myers
stated, “I really like the idea of a VPO
in our store.” He went on to say, “We
try to provide as many services as we
can to the community and having the
convenience of being able to buy a
book of stamps while shopping in our
store seemed to be another service we
could offer.”
VPOs are operated by local businesses contracting with the U.S. Postal
Service, and offer a range of popular
postal products and services including
stamps and flat-rate packaging. Town
& Country Hardware’s hours are 7:30
am to 5:30 pm Monday through Friday,
and 7:30 am to 4:30 pm on Saturdays.
The main U.S. Post Office located on
Morton Street in downtown Shipshewana will maintain the current hours,
Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 12
noon; 1:30 to 4:00 pm and Saturdays
8:00 am to 10:00 am.
