During the holiday season, church families would host college exchange students that were unable to return home for their winter break. Sherry had also visited Europe in high school and has always been passionate about learning about other people and their cultures, so hosting an exchange student for an entire school year sounded nothing less than exciting. Upon first arriving in the US, Kurt was a little nervous but mostly just excited. He has thoroughly enjoyed living with the Good family and attending school with their youngest son. While staying with the Goods, along with playing baseball for the first time, Kurt has been able to experience several other things for the first time as well. Zip-lining, skiing and fishing are just some of the new things he’s tried this year, but he found fishing to be his favorite thing so far. In addition to extracurricular activities, Kurt has also found that he really enjoys studying robotics in school, something they don’t offer at home. The biggest ‘first’ for Kurt, however, was the snow. Being surrounded by cold and snow was entirely new for him. While he enjoyed skiing and other snow-bound activities, he is already looking forward to warmer weather. Kurt has traveled to many different places, including Hawaii, South America, Chile and Panama, but he has spent the longest time and made the most friends here in Shipshewana. “The sad thing is, who knows if I’m going to see them again.” But since he has family in Virginia, he’s hopeful that he may be able to see some of his school friends from Westview again someday. Not only will he miss his friends when he returns home, but there is a key ingredient missing from Bolivia that Kurt found here in the US: Chicken McNuggets! Or, more specifically, McDonald’s McNuggets! Kurt immediately developed a taste for some of the sandwiches and snacks found only at the infamous golden-arched restaurant, and he will be very sad to leave it behind when he goes home.
