Brian Arbuckle, of Shipshewana,
has been an avid bicyclist for 10 years.
After undergoing knee surgery eleven
years ago, Brian’s doctor told him that
he should give up playing basketball
and running, and he suggested that he
try cycling or swimming. “I didn’t have
a pool, but my son had a very nice bicycle that he left at home, when he went
back to college, so I began riding his
bike and fell in love with cycling,”
Brian said. “I ride nearly 2,000
miles on a trainer in my basement
during the winter months to maintain
fitness and prepare for the outdoor riding season. From early spring into early
winter I ride around 7,000 miles.”
Brian feels that cycling is a great
way to lose or manage weight. “Cycling
is great exercise for those who have

knee problems, as it allows movement
of the joints without the load bearing demands of running or walking,”
Brian stated. He concluded by saying,
“Cycling is also great for one’s cardiovascular system and is therefore also a
great aid in reducing blood pressure for
those who contend with that issue.
