Shipshewana Town News
The appearance of robins, unpredictable weather and the road
construction crews are true signs of
spring’s arrival in Indiana.
We are very pleased to announce
that according to the Media Relations
Department of the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT),
there are two construction projects
planned in LaGrange County this year
that will affect the Town of Shipshewana and surrounding area.
The first project location is on SR
5 at CR 450 North, 1.5 miles south of
SR 120. This project is called a Sight
Distance Improvement. The contractor
for the project is Moonrock, Inc. with
the initial work scheduled to begin the
week of March 26. A house and barn
located on the northwest corner of SR
5 and CR 450N currently create sight
and visibility problems for eastbound
traffic on 450N. These buildings will
be demolished, and the related stone
retaining wall located on the SR 5
shoulder will be removed. The back
slopes and ditch line will be re-graded.
The purpose of the project is to improve sight distance and visibility for
eastbound traffic on 450N at the SR 5
intersection, for better motorist safety.
The scheduled completion date for the
project is June 2012. The project cost is
expected to be $59,000.
The second project location is on
SR 5 at US 20 to CR 345 North (approximately 2.5 miles). This project
is an Asphalt Resurfacing project.
The contractor for this project will
be Brooks Construction, with a MidApril construction start planned. This
resurfacing project will extend from
US 20, through Shipshewana, 2.5 miles
to CR 345N (Country Lane). Brooks
Construction will perform work on
Mondays and Thursdays only to reduce
impact on flea market visitors and
tourism. Through traffic will be permitted under the direction of flaggers.
Restrictions will be lifted on Tuesdays,
Wednesdays and Fridays to better
accommodate tourism in town. It is
scheduled for completion in June.

Spring is the season for unpredictable and sometimes violent weather.
We want to be certain that our citizens
understand that tornado sirens are not
designed for people to hear them inside
of buildings. The intent of the sirens
is to warn people who are outside at
the time of severe weather to seek
cover. The Shipshewana Fire Department strongly recommends that you
by Sheryl Kelly
consider investing in weather radios to
assure that you will get warnings for
approaching storms, especially, while
in your residences. Having a weather
radio can help solve the problem of
knowing when a storm is coming and
allow you to take some action. If you
don’t already have one, give some
thought to purchasing a weather radio.
Finally, we would like to let everyone know that the Hostetler’s Hudson
Museum will be re-opening on April 2,
