This month, Elijah Haven Crisis
Intervention Center will be sponsoring a teen drama, “The Outrage,” to be
performed at county high schools on
the topic of,” teen dating violence.”
You may wonder if dating violence
is a reality in our community.
Statistically, the answer is yes. One
out of four teens report being physically or sexually abused by a dating
partner. Over ninety percent of teens
aged fifteen to twenty-three, presently in dating relationships, report
they have been physically, emotionally, or sexually abused. There has
been national and local recognition of
the need to discuss the reality of teen
dating violence. But first, identification
of dating violence is essential. Physical,
emotional, mental, and sexual abuse
all encompass dating violence. Some
examples of what this looks like may
include:
• A partner says he/she can’t live
without you.
• He/she breaks things to intimidate
you.
• He/she threatens to hurt themselves if you break up with them.
• He/she pressures you into sexual
behavior by saying, “If you love
me, you would…”
• He/she humiliates you and belittles your opinion.

about the time you spend with
your friends.
• He/she is constantly checking up
on you, texting you, asking where
you are and what you are doing.
• He/she wants your relationship to
get serious too quickly, and they
refuse to take “no” for an answer.
• You’re frightened of him/her and
worry about how they’ll react to
the things you say or do.
• He/she uses drugs or alcohol and
pressures you to take them even
when you don’t want to.
• Treats you like property rather
than a person they value.
• When they get angry, he or she
calls you names, kicks, and
pushes you.
• He/she wants you to be available
to them at all times.
• The person you are dating treats
their parents badly.
• Forces you to choose being with
them over family and friends.
• Makes you feel afraid to express
your own thoughts or feelings,
make decisions about how to
spend money, where to go, what
to wear, or who to hang out with.
• He/she constantly threatens to
break up with you or constantly
accuses you of planning to break
up with them.
• He/she insults or humiliates you in
front of your friends or peers.
As parents and community members, it’s important to talk with our
teens about how they are being treated
in dating relationships. Unhealthy,
inappropriate behavior should not
be minimized or accepte ???!??????)?????????????e?????????????)????????????????????????????)]?????????????????????????????)?????????????????????????????)?????????????????????????()!
