Healthy This month, Elijah Haven Crisis Intervention Center will be sponsoring a teen drama, “The Outrage,” to be performed at county high schools on the topic of,” teen dating violence.” You may wonder if dating violence is a reality in our community. Statistically, the answer is yes. One out of four teens report being physically or sexually abused by a dating partner. Over ninety percent of teens aged fifteen to twenty-three, presently in dating relationships, report they have been physically, emotionally, or sexually abused. There has been national and local recognition of the need to discuss the reality of teen dating violence. But first, identification of dating violence is essential. Physical, emotional, mental, and sexual abuse all encompass dating violence. Some examples of what this looks like may include: • A partner says he/she can’t live without you. • He/she breaks things to intimidate you. • He/she threatens to hurt themselves if you break up with them. • He/she pressures you into sexual behavior by saying, “If you love me, you would…” • He/she humiliates you and belittles your opinion. As parents and community members, it’s important to talk with our teens about how they are being treated in dating relationships.
