The company’s headquarters were
in LaGrange from which the first
surveys were made of the new railroad. Most of the right-of-way was
purchased during 1903 and 1904. By
the end of 1904, most of the 10 mile
stretch between Shipshewana and LaGrange had been graded. However, in
spite of the fact that the rail and other
material was already in LaGrange, the
severe winter weather halted construction until March. The final spike in the
track was driven on the afternoon of
March 10, 1905, on the Eugene Davis
farm. There were two trains a day
between LaGrange and Shipshewana.
The fare was 25 cents each way, or
about 2 ½ cents a mile.
