I can’t wait for everything to start happening.” Those are the comments of LaGrange County Habitat for Humanity’s recently announced 21st partner, Stephanie Moore and her family. “Everything,” of course, means construction of a home for the Moore family of Topeka. And, they won’t have to move very far. “About 2 blocks,” Stephanie reports. “Our new home will be built about two blocks from where we live now. We’ll be just across the street from the Topeka Sale Barn.” Mrs. Moore, a 4 year employee at WalMart in Sturgis, is currently working as a pharmacy technician for the company. She has three children: Kayden, 5; Izaak, 4; and Becky, 3. Mrs. Moore first became aware of the opportunities available through LCHFH when she received a flyer sent home from the school of one of her children. Her mother encouraged her to apply. She did, and three months later, she was notified that she had been selected. Construction is slated to begin May 15, which will provide ample time for Mrs. Moore to work the 25 hours of “sweat equity” which are required before construction can begin. During the construction months, Mrs. Moore will work at least 100 additional hours of “sweat equity,” and her family and friends will contribute another 100 hours. After completion of the house, Mrs. Moore will sign a mortgage, repaying LCHFH for the costs of purchasing the lot, the materials, and the labor that cannot be provided by the many volunteers who will supply the bulk of the workforce during construction. “Everything,” to a new LCHFH partner family, includes many facets. Construction, of course, is paramount, but “sweat equity,” partnering with numerous volunteers, and repayment of the mortgage The next beneficary of Habitat for Humanity Stephanie Moore and her three are also important chunks of the equation. children, Kayden, Izaak, and Becky.
