LaGrange Communities Youth Centers To Be
Featured As Davis Mercantile 5th Saturday Recipient
The LaGrange Communities Youth Centers, Inc.
(LCYC) will be the featured non-profit organization of
the day for the second Davis Mercantile 5th Saturday
Community Day to be held April 30, 2011 from
9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The merchants of The Davis
Mercantile, located in Shipshewana, IN will be donating
a percentage of the day’s sales to help the organization
with ongoing needs and expenses.
Several activities sponsored by the LaGrange
Communities Youth Centers will be taking place at
The Davis Mercantile beginning at 10:00 a .m. Families
are invited to enjoy a magic show entitled, “The Magic
of Nature.” Pulling a rabbit out of a hat is child’s play
compared to pulling a real butterfly out of a chrysalis,
but tricks and illusions are great tools to help illustrate
the mysterious workings of the natural world. Scott
Beam, Interpretive Naturalist for LaGrange County
Parks, is the woodland wizard for this magical look
at the miracles of nature. Performance times will be
10:30 a.m.; 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Children up to
age 12 may participate in a “decorate a kite” coloring
contest. A top winner will be chosen from the entries
to receive a $20.00 Davis Mercantile Gift Certificate.
Families will also have the opportunity to build their
own kites with free kits and instructions provided by the
Hoosier Kiteflyers Society. Families are encouraged to
try out their new kites at the Kite Komotion, Kite Clinic
& Festival also hosted by LCYC to at the Shipshewana
Town Center /Hostetler Hudson Auto Museum from
11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Representatives from the
LaGrange Communities Youth Centers will be present
at The Davis Mercantile to share information about the
LCYC, its mission, upcoming events and future plans
for the organization.
The LCYC has provided a variety of opportunities
for youth since its inception in 2006. The organization

Red Barn Shoppes
Celebrate 10th Year
The stores in Yoder’s Red Barn Shoppes, located
on SR 5 in Shipshewana, have announced their 10th
Anniversary Celebration. It is scheduled for April 1 and
2, 2011. The two days will be filled with food, games,
and deals. The 1st Annual Corn Hole Tournament will
be held on Saturday, April 2 beginning at 11:00 a.m.
There will be divisions for men, women, and children
with prizes for the top three teams in each division.
All participants will receive a gift. There is no charge
for the tournament. Teams of two can preregister by
calling 260-768-7245 or by visiting Country Spice Decor,
located in Yoder’s Red Barn Shoppes.
was founded by Circuit Court Judge Scott Vanderbeck
with a mission to serve the youth of LaGrange
County. In order to help youth who are financially
disadvantaged the LCYC offers all youth services
free to participants. Operating through grants and
donations, the organization has offered free bowling
clinics, music lessons, and summer adventure programs
for youth. The LCYC was also instrumental in creating
the Disc Golf course at Delt Church Park. For the past
five years the LCYC has conducted a free after school
program at both Lakeland Middle School and Westview
Elementary.
Perhaps the biggest undertaking for the LCYC is yet
to come. The organization recently received a generous
donation of 14 acres of land. The land, located on the
north side of LaGrange, will be used to create a youth
center and recreational facility. Plans are currently
underway to begin phase one of the development.
The project will be financed through grants and
private donations. The donation of this land opens up
many new possibilities for the LCYC and will help the
organization fulfill its vision of bringing wholesome,
positive activities to the youth of LaGrange County.
