Dr Lister said that , in general terms , the aims of the new Section would be :
To hold scientific meetings , Promote interest in radiological protection with other UK societies , and To forge links with other national societies in Europe .
He advised that interest was such that the number of UK members of the American Health Physics Society ( members and applicants ) was now 96 , up from 23 in June 1962 , with a considerable number more awaiting the outcome of this meeting .
Discussion of the aims of a UK Society showed a strong feeling that , in the future , an independent UK society , not linked to the Health Physics Society , but having international links , should be a worthwhile longer term objective .
The proposal to form “ The Society for Radiological Protection , the United Kingdom Section of the Health Physics Society ” was agreed unanimously and the Society was declared founded .
The proposed Bylaws ( previously circulated ) were discussed in detail and the pro tempore Board agreed to make the agreed changes and re-circulate them . The Bylaws would then be submitted to the Society for approval .
The pro tempore Board of Directors and Officers was elected unanimously . Those present at the meeting were declared by the President to be Founder Members of the Society .
Formation of the UK Section was approved by the Board of Directors of the Health Physics Society at its meeting in New York on 10 June 1963 .
Following a postal ballot , the Board dissolved its formal connection with the Health Physics Society and at 3.00pm on 31 Dec 1965 changed its name to The Society for Radiological Protection ( SRP ).”
Bernard James is the last surviving Founder Member . He served as SRP President 1979 / 80 and was awarded Honorary Fellowship in 2011 . He has also served on many Society committees over a number of years .
