SPRING GOLF TIPS FROM OUR DIRECTOR OF INSTRUCTION :

RICHARD RICE

Spring is upon us , and for some of us , that means it ’ s time to dust off the clubs and get some practice in for the 2024 season . One of the toughest things about Spring golf for many is the dormant bermuda grass in the fairways . Here are a few tips to help you make better contact on chip shots from the dormant fairway grass :
1 . Mindset is key : for a running chip shot , the low point of your swing should occur AFTER striking the golf ball . This means the club should strike the ball , THEN strike the ground .
2 . Setup position helps us achieve a proper low point . For a chip shot , I like to teach a narrow stance ( about 1 clubhead width ), and a ball position on the instep of the trail foot . Set your low point in front

of the ball by keeping level shoulders , pushing a little weight to the lead leg and holding it there , and putting your nose and sternum about 1-2 inches in front of the ball .
3 . The key during the swing is to keep your low point in place . Keep your weight on your lead foot and keep your nose and sternum 1-2 inches in front of the ball .
4 . Your swing isn ’ t done at the golf ball . The final piece to keeping your low point in front of the ball is using your pivot motion to get your chest turned towards your target in the follow through . Hold this position and see how you did after the ball is done rolling . You should finish with your weight on your lead leg , your body rotated towards the target , and a relatively low clubhead for a chip shot .
