The company provides halal-certified New Zealand made dairy, serving more than 2.7 million glasses of milk to Malaysians every day. Today, Fonterra Brands has earned its place as the No 1 dairy supplier for food service in Malaysia and Singapore. There are 549 staff in Malaysia working to deliver high-quality nutrition through its key brands including Anlene, Fernleaf, CalciYum, Anchor, Anchor Food Professionals, Chesdale, Perfect Italiano, Anmum, Mainland, and New Zealand Milk Products (NZMP). Megawati said Fonterra upheld a stringent halal standard in Malaysia. It meets the highest halal standards certified by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) as well as the relevant recognised foreign Halal certification bodies and authorities. Besides respecting halal, the company also upholds the concept of Toyyiban, a term mentioned in the Qur’an advising Muslims to eat “good things”, which refers to wholesomeness, good quality, nutritional, safe, hygienic, and healthy edibles. She said: “The concept of Halalan Toyyiban for Fonterra Brands starts from animal welfare. It is about the types of food we feed the cows and giving them a good rest as that is also a part of the Halalan Toyyiban. “The process goes beyond what can and cannot be added, and good manufacturing practices and hygiene practices.” Fonterra Brands takes every precaution to ensure the supply chain meets the strictest halal standards. The company ensures all ingredients used in the manufacturing process are halal-certified. Non-halal materials are barred from all of its manufacturing sites. Even both factories and office located in Shah Alam and Kota Kemuning in Selangor are certified halal premises. “We clean our manufacturing sites in a way that actively prevents any chance of contamination from other sources. We also work with distributors who are halalcompliant to avoid any contamination of our consumer brands. “Our team members are a part of the committee to look into the Malaysian standard so that we can bring the industry’s voice where we look into the developments of the halal standard,” shared Megawati. The company also strives to create the awareness that halal is not only for Muslims. The effort to create awareness starts from its manufacturing centres where they carry out programmes from a few years back to educate the workers that halal is not only applicable to Muslims.
