Insights from NATDA’ s Women in the Industry online session on overcoming self-doubt and stepping into leadership
“ Imposter syndrome is the feeling that you don’ t belong, even when your experience says otherwise, and it continues to quietly hold many professionals back from speaking up, taking on new opportunities, or stepping into leadership.”
That idea set the tone for the recent NATDA Women in the Trailer Industry online event, Overcoming Imposter Syndrome, featuring Susan Burke, Vice President of Marketing at 700Credit.
Burke shared a candid look at the self-doubt many professionals experience, highlighted several ways professionals can push back against imposter syndrome:
1. Know your go-to pattern. Everyone has one. Maybe it’ s perfectionism, working solo instead of asking for help, or feeling like you need all the answers before speaking up. Once you recognize your pattern, it’ s much easier to catch yourself in the moment.
2. Push Back with facts. When thoughts like“ I’ m not qualified” or“ Someone else could do this better” show up, don’ t take them at face value. Look at what you’ ve actually accomplished. That shift helps separate what’ s real from what’ s just a reaction.

3. Stop waiting for perfection. Great ideas do not get shared when you are waiting for everything to feel flawless. Strong work moves the needle— perfect work often stays unfinished.
4. Ask for help. Asking questions and seeking input isn’ t a weakness; it’ s part of how good team’ s work. The most effective professionals don’ t go it alone; they tap into the experience around them.
