HAMMONTON—Locally-owned shops received
a boost on November 24 as Hammonton celebrated
Small Business Saturday.
The annual shopping event was first launched by
American Express in 2010 as a way to highlight and
celebrate small businesses in communities. The tradi-
tion of Small Business Saturday has continued to
grow each year, with an estimated $85 billion spent
at independent retailers and restaurants since its in-
ception, according to a spend statistic survey commis-
sioned by American Express.
Small Business Saturday is especially popular in
Hammonton—a town that is well-known for its many
independent retailers and restaurants. Several of these
small businesses offered special sales and promotions
to celebrate the occasion, while a large contingency
of patrons came out to show their support throughout
the day.
Store owners love the shopping holiday.
“Small Business Saturday is a special holiday. It
draws great attention to our local business. The con-
sumer, being local or from nearby communities, ben-
efits as well—with having first-hand, up-close,
special deals, savings, great tastings and samples from
our store. It’s a great time! We love it,” Tales of the
Olive owner Kelly Brown said.
Shoppers also enjoy the day.
“If you enjoy living in a small town, you have to
support the businesses that are there or they’ll disap-
