Our veterans

We are very possessive about veterans here at The Gazette.
We call them “our veterans” because that’s how we feel about them, particularly the ones who came from Hammonton. Our veterans are honored members
of the community, because they sacrificed their time, their bodies and their
minds to serving the United States of America in wars around the world.
Hammonton, and America, owes our veterans a great debt. The freedom we
enjoy today was hard-earned. It was hard-earned by them, and by their comrades
who did not return from far-flung war zones worldwide.
Recently, The Gazette held an interview session with several Hammontonians
who served on the same air base in Vietnam at the same time, from 1969 to
1970, while they were in the National Guard. Their memories are as fresh as
they were at the end of their tours of duty, even though more than 40 years have
passed. Some of those recollections are in an article that begins on page 1 of this
week’s Gazette.
The Vietnam Veteran is the latest veteran from Hammonton to begin to command a leadership spot as the oldest veterans in town. They follow the members of the Union veterans of the Civil War, World War I, World War II and the
Korean War. The older veterans of these earlier wars have either disappeared or
are disappearing; the Vietnam Veterans have now stepped forward to take the
